Engineering a Ferris Wheel

As many of you know, Friday's we have the students in 4th and 5th grade switch classrooms. The teachers focus on one part of S.T.E.M./Study Skills (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). This month the topic in my classroom was E for engineering.

September is the month the state fair is in town and what better way to celebrate, than to learn about one of the most popular fair rides: Ferris Wheels.

We learned about Mr. George Ferris and the history behind these magnificent structures. But there is no fun learning about it unless you actually get to build it.

So students were given: toilet paper/ paper towel rolls, Popsicle sticks, string, tape, and glue. Their goal this week: build the base of their Ferris Wheel.

As we work together to build our Ferris Wheels, we are leaning teamwork, cooperation and the engineering behind building the famous Ferris Wheel.

Stay tuned for the final products.

Wonderful Memories!

Wow, what a great turn out we had for Open House! It was so much fun watching parents guess what their child wants to be when they grow up and watching the kids show parents all around our classroom!
Here are two of the families that came: Kailey and Brayden with their parents. Who guessed right about what their child wants to be when they grow up?

Kailey's mom, Jennie guessed Vet, but Kailey wants to be a teacher.

Brayden's soon to be stepdad, Jason guessed President and Brayden's mom, Jennie guessed Archaeologist, who was right......Jennie was right! Nice job mom.

Thanks again to all the families that came. It was a wonderful turn out.

Show-N-Tell: Ava
Ava brought in her Marionette this week. It was so cute how she made it walk.

Ava is explaining how she made her Marionette.

Honoring September 11th, 2001

We proudly honored the men and women who fought and died this day 12 years ago.

But we also got to learn about one African tribe who gave America 14 cows in honor of those who died.

We are saluting those who have helped our country, especially the Maasai tribe in Kenya who gave 14 cows to America.

NVA Open House and so much more...

Upcoming events:
This week we have Open House. It is on Thursday, September 12th. There will be a light dinner served beginning at 5:40-6:15. You are then free to come by the classroom and hear all about the wonderful things that we have planned for the year.

Scholastic Book Fair is here!!! Our class will visit on Tuesday for ideas of any books that the students might like to purchase. On Thursday we will again visit but this time to purchase. If you plan on purchasing please send money with your child on Thursday.

I have gotten some great feedback about homework and adjusted it this week. Please feel free to leave me comments on the first page. It helps me adjust to a more manageable workload for your children. I can't emphasis enough the importance of the reading part. If for some reason your child is unable to complete a box but is able to read their 20 minutes. I am okay with this. But please note in the comments section.

Show-n-tell last week:

Brayden shared his Yugio cards. I was amazed at the number of cards he has. He even has some from Japan. WOW!

"Water" cards

Brayden has over a hundred cards!

Thanks for sharing Brayden.
